When do assessments happen at Hoot?

Lessons Always Start with an Assessment

Every child begins at Hoot with a Hoot Reading Assessment (HRA). This assessment typically takes 1–2 lessons to complete and helps us understand your child’s current reading skills in order to create their personalized Instructional Plan.

Ongoing Assessments Throughout the Year

After the initial assessment, Hoot uses two types of assessments to monitor progress over time.

1. Hoot Reading Assessments (HRAs)

HRAs are more comprehensive assessments that help us understand how your child’s reading skills have grown and whether their Instructional Plan should be updated.

They are scheduled three times per year:

  • Early September

  • Mid to late January

  • Late May

An HRA only takes place if your child has completed at least 12 lessons since their last assessment. This ensures the assessment reflects meaningful learning, not just short-term practice.

2. Progress Monitoring Assessments (PMAs)

Progress Monitoring Assessments are shorter check-ins used to see how skills are developing between full Hoot Reading Assessments.

PMAs are scheduled during:

  • Mid November

  • Late March

  • Late July

To receive a PMA, your child must have completed at least 12 lessons since their most recent assessment, whether that was an HRA or a PMA.

A Helpful Reminder

Not receiving an assessment during a scheduled window does not mean something is wrong. It simply means your child needs more instructional time before their next assessment so results are accurate and meaningful.

If you ever have questions about your child's assessments, we’re always happy to help.
