What does Hoot Reading teach?
Hoot Reading uses an evidence-based teaching model grounded in the large body of research commonly referred to as the Science of Reading. Our instruction is systematic, skill-based, and guided by ongoing assessment, allowing teachers to meet your child exactly where they are in their reading development.
Hoot’s Word Reading Scope and Sequence* outlines the phonics skills students learn and the order in which they are taught.

* A scope and sequence is an instructional roadmap that details what content is taught (scope) and in what order (sequence) in an educational program.
Each learning unit is described in more detail in the below linked articles:
- Pre-Word Reading Units
- Early Word Reading Units
- Complex Word Reading Units
In addition to word reading, Hoot Reading also supports students as they learn to read and understand connected text. Text Reading instruction includes two comprehensive learning units:
- Comprehension
- Fluency
Together, Word Reading and Text Reading instruction ensure students build strong, transferable reading skills that support long-term success.
