What does a Hoot lesson look like?

Hoot lessons follow a structured approach designed to help children build strong reading skills step by step.

Teachers use your child’s Instructional Plan, based on the results of their Hoot Reading Assessment and Progress Monitoring, to decide which skill to focus on and which materials to use in each lesson. This ensures every lesson is targeted to your child’s current needs.

Below is an example of the an early word reading lesson focused on the short /a/ vowel sound:

Hoot lessons use high-quality instructional materials designed for effective online teaching & learning. These resources are designed to support clear teacher modelling, active student engagement, and repeated practice, which are all essential components of strong literacy instruction.

These materials were independently reviewed and recognized by the National Student Support Accelerator at Stanford University for their exceptional quality.
