Navigating the Hoot App

The Hoot Reading app is designed to be simple and easy for families to use. Once you’re logged in, everything your child needs for lessons - schedule, library access, and lesson entry - is available in one place.

This article walks through the main areas of the app so you know where to go and what to expect.

Logging In and Choosing a Profile

After logging in, you’ll see the profile selection page. From here, select your child’s profile to access their lesson. Each child has their own profile, schedule, and library.

Once you’re inside your child’s profile, you’ll be taken to their Hoot Library and lesson area.

Finding and Joining Lessons

Upcoming lessons appear automatically in your child’s profile.

  • The Join Lesson button becomes available about 10 minutes before the lesson start time

  • Clicking Join Lesson opens a short setup screen to check audio and video before entering the lesson

  • If your child joins before the teacher, they’ll see a book they can explore while waiting

You can view upcoming and past lessons from your parent dashboard.

  • Open the menu and select Schedule

This is where you’ll find lesson dates, times, and any updates to your child’s schedule.

Using the Hoot Library

The Hoot Library is where your child can explore books outside of lessons.

From the library, your child can:

  • Browse fiction and nonfiction books

  • Read independently between lessons

  • Revisit books they’ve already explored

The library is designed to support reading practice at home and help children build confidence with books.

Note, library access still required an internet connection.

Using Full Screen Mode

For the best lesson experience, Hoot Reading works best in full screen mode—especially on tablets or smaller screens.

Fullscreen mode should automatically toggle when you initially join a lesson. You can also enter full screen mode by clicking the icon in the top fight of the student lesson page.

Full screen mode helps:

  • Reduce distractions

  • Make text and lesson materials easier to see

  • Improve focus during reading activities
