How Hoot Reading lessons work

Hoot Reading lessons are live, 1:1 sessions taught by qualified teachers. Each lesson is carefully structured to build reading skills step by step, while keeping children engaged and supported.

Lessons take place in the Hoot Reading app and follow a consistent format so children know what to expect each time they log in.

Here is an example of the flow of a Short Vowels lesson:

How Long Lessons Are and What Happens During Them

Hoot Reading lessons are 25 minutes long. This length is intentional - it allows for focused instruction without overwhelming young learners.

A typical lesson includes:

Skill Review and Warm-Up

Lessons often begin with a brief review of previously learned skills. This helps reinforce learning and prepares your child for new instruction.

Explicit Skill Instruction

The teacher introduces or practices specific reading skills using a Structured Literacy approach. This may include:

  • Phonics and word reading

  • Sounding out and blending words

  • Decoding strategies

  • Vocabulary and language work

Skills are taught clearly and directly, with plenty of guided practice.

Reading Practice

Your child will read texts that match the skills they are learning. These may include:

  • Decodable books aligned to current phonics skills

  • Carefully selected texts to support fluency and comprehension

Teachers provide support as needed and encourage children to apply strategies independently.

Ongoing Checks for Understanding

Throughout the lesson, the teacher observes how your child is doing and adjusts instruction as needed. This helps ensure lessons stay aligned to your child’s reading development.

Encouragement and Confidence Building

Teachers create a calm, positive learning environment. Building confidence and motivation is an important part of every lesson.

Designed to Support Progress Over Time

Lessons build on one another using assessment-informed instruction. As your child masters new skills, lessons gradually increase in complexity to support continued growth.

Consistency matters - regular attendance helps children make the most progress and feel comfortable with the lesson routine.
