How does Hoot Reading assess?
At Hoot Reading, assessment is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing part of how we personalize instruction to help your child make steady, meaningful progress in reading.
The Hoot Reading Assessment
Every child begins their journey at Hoot with the Hoot Reading Assessment, a 1:1 assessment conducted by their teacher. The assessment helps us understand which reading skills your child has mastered, which are still developing, and what they’re ready to learn next.
Based on the results, Hoot creates a personalized Instructional Plan for your child that guides where their teacher focuses instruction during lessons.
Children typically complete three Hoot Reading Assessments each year, allowing us to regularly update their Instructional Plan and ensure instruction stays closely aligned to their needs.
Progress Monitoring Along the Way
Learning to read doesn’t happen all at once, so Hoot doesn’t rely on a single snapshot of progress.
Between assessments, teachers use Progress Monitoring Assessments to check in on growth and adjust instruction as needed. This helps lessons stay responsive as your child’s skills develop.

Designed Specifically for Online Reading Instruction
Hoot’s assessments are purpose-built for live, online tutoring. They were developed by literacy experts who drew from leading, evidence-aligned structured literacy frameworks, including the Lexia LETRS® Suite and UFLI Foundations Program.
Assessments are designed to feel supportive and conversational, not stressful or high-pressure. Teachers meet children exactly where they are and guide them through tasks that gradually increase in complexity.
Your child is never expected to perform at a certain grade level. Assessments simply help teachers understand what your child can do right now and what instruction will be most helpful next.
