Device and technology requirements
Hoot Reading lessons happen live online, using video and audio. To make sure lessons run smoothly, your child will need a device and internet connection that can support a video call without interruptions.
You don’t need anything fancy. Most modern computers and tablets work well.
What kind of device does my child need?
Hoot Reading works best on:
-
A laptop or desktop computer (Windows or Mac), or
-
A tablet that meets the size and software requirements below
We recommend using a laptop or desktop whenever possible, as larger screens make it easier for children to see lesson materials and interact comfortably with their teacher.
Internet connection
A stable internet connection is important so your child can clearly see and hear their teacher.
For the best experience:
-
Try to use a reliable home Wi-Fi connection
-
Avoid streaming videos, gaming, or video calls on the same network during lessons
If the internet connection is slow or unstable, lessons may have choppy audio or video.
Screen size & device requirements (for Tablets)
If your child is using a tablet, screen size matters.
iPads
-
Must be running iPadOS 15 or newer
-
An iPad Air or larger (minimum 10.7 inches) is recommended
-
Smaller iPads may work but can feel cramped during lessons
Android tablets
-
Must be running Android 5.0 or newer
-
Screen size should be about 10 inches (similar to an iPad Air)
-
Must use the Chrome browser
Phones and small tablets are not supported.
Recommended browsers and settings
Hoot Reading works inside a web browser (like the apps you use to visit websites).
For the smoothest experience, we recommend:
-
Google Chrome (best option)
-
Firefox
When joining lessons:
-
Allow access to the camera and microphone when prompted
-
Make sure your browser is up to date
-
If something isn’t loading, try opening the site in a private or incognito window
Ad blockers or privacy extensions can sometimes interfere with lessons. If you run into issues, turning them off for Hoot Reading often helps.
