What Information We Collect

When a family signs up for Hoot Reading, we collect:

  • Account Info: Names, email addresses, phone numbers, billing information, and passwords when you set up an account.

  • Student Profile: Student name, grade, interests, reading level, learning needs, and related details.

  • Lesson Data: Audio and video of lessons, books read, and reading progress and preferences.

  • Device & Usage Data: IP address, browser/device type, operating system, session timestamps, cookies and analytics data.

How We Use Your Information

We only collect the information required to provide and improve our services:

  • To deliver our 1:1 online reading instruction,

  • To match students to teachers and tailor instructional plans, and

  • To improve our services.

We do not sell or rent your personal information.


How We Protect Data

  • Commercial-grade safeguards: firewalls, encryption (in transit and at rest), secure cloud storage.

  • Employees and teachers undergo background checks and annual security training, and access to personal information is strictly on a “need-to-know” basis.

  • Hoot Reading is certified by iKeepSafe for compliance with key U.S. student privacy laws: Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Child Safety Protection Coalition (CSPC).
