Position: Data Analyst
Location: Remote Within Canada (Headquarters in Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Reports to: VP, Literacy & Learning

Hoot Reading is the leading online tutoring service providing 1:1, evidence-based literacy instruction with qualified teachers, at scale. Incubated on a research project at the Nokia Research Lab with Sesame Workshop (the creators of Sesame Street) and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, Hoot Reading partners with K-12 school districts, educational partners and families across North America to change children’s lives through literacy.

As a Data Analyst on the Literacy & Learning team, you will own impact reporting and operational data analytics. You will work in close collaboration with the Operations and Marketing departments to oversee data-oriented program tracking, to develop data-driven reports and visuals for various communications, and to flag quality issues identified through patterns and trends in data.

  • Strong Data Literacy: Proven data analysis and management skills working with diverse datasets and the ability to establish measurement and reporting frameworks. Basic understanding of data engineering principles would be considered an asset.
  • Impactful Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex data into meaningful and actionable insights, deliver analytics in the form of visualizations and dashboards, and present findings to non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Passion for Research: Strong understanding of research methodology and analysis and able to collaborate effectively across teams to ensure data consistency and integrity. 
  • Degree or Practical Experience: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Marketing, Business, Statistics, Computer Science) and/or 5+ years of experience in data and analytics.
  • Education Sector Expertise: Understanding of K-12 education, particularly in the area of early literacy, as well as experience with assessment and reporting of student outcomes would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather and preprocess data from various sources such as databases, spreadsheets, and other systems, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Use research methods and statistical techniques to analyze data sets, identify trends, patterns, and correlations using tools such as Google Sheets, SQL, or other analytics platforms.
  • Create visual representations of data and summary reports to communicate insights effectively to various audiences, both internally and externally. 
  • Ensure the quality and integrity of data and analysis, including ongoing consideration and prioritization of privacy and security requirements.
  • Collaborate across teams to stay up to date on operational processes, technical updates or changes, and business needs that may influence data and analysis.
  • Work independently, applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to tackle complex data challenges, and prioritize effectively, with many competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
