Hoot Reading is an Application (the “Site”) where you (the “User”) can access content and communicate with other Users. To make this system work, we have created a transparent and accountable system.
What Personal Information we collect:
In order to facilitate student-teacher connections, we need to collect some personally identifiable information from you to set up an account. A “User Account” provides access to the Site and requires an email address, a password, and year of birth (must be at least 18 at the last day of the previous year to create an account). With a User Account, the User becomes a representative of a household and can link to other Users who are representatives of other households on the Site. Once the User Account is created, the User uploads a profile picture.
Why we collect Personal Information:
Among other things, we use Personal Information to:
· Develop new features on the Site
· Optimize functionality of the Site
· Personalize the User’s experience
· Send promotional emails to the Users
· Provide reports of aggregate usage to key partners such as book publishers
· Send updates about our service by email to the Users
· Ask for feedback to help make our service better
· Send information to the Users about products and information that we think will be of interest. The Users can ask not to receive promotional emails
The User has control over what they share on Hoot Reading:
The User is a representative of their household in communication in Hoot Reading. . The User may share video and other personal information about those they designate as a member of their household (“Household Family Members”). At any time, the User may view and edit their profile picture or their household connections. Users can opt to not receive any promotional email from us, and ask us to delete or disable their account.
What if I have Household Family Members under the age of 18:
You must be at least 18 at the last day of the previous year to create a User Account on Hoot Reading .
How we collect, use, and disclose information:
We also use aggregated data that does not identify you personally to improve our existing service and develop new features. Such tracking information includes, access times, referring websites, pages on our site that you visit, links that you use, and the content that you viewed.
Data about specific User activities that may be collected include, and are not limited to, information regarding books read, interaction with books (e.g. page turning and pointing data), content viewed on the Site, pages visited on the Site, links used, navigation elements used, locale (country code only), preferred language and the amount of time spent on the Site. Additionally, we store the transaction history of all commerce transactions done through Hoot Reading.
We also plan to offer rating functionality that will allow Users to rate books and, at their option, enter the age range for children that they read the book with. We plan to collect and analyze such rating data.
Hoot Reading does not share any information collected on Hoot Reading with Facebook.
We may share your Personal Information for legal and safety reasons:
We are always concerned about the safety of all of our Users. We disclose Personal Information about Hoot Reading Users in cases where it is required by law or where we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights and/or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process served on our Site, or is otherwise reasonable to protect someone from possible injury.
Communications from the Hoot Reading team:
We contact Users with notification of any material changes to the Site or information collection and use and promotional materials. All promotional emails will contain an ‘unsubscribe’ option in each communication if you choose to opt-out of these emails.
Hoot Reading is a participant in the Indigo Affiliate Program which allows us to earn commission from Indigo if you make a purchase on Indigo.ca after clicking through a custom link we have provided. This may be shared on our website, social media channels, or directly through email.
When signed into our applications, Hoot Reading stores cookies within the application context. These cookies are sandboxed from any other application. These are used for authentication only within the context of the app.
We use Google Analytics’ 3rd-party audience data such as age, gender, and interests to better understanding the behavior of our customers and work with companies that collect information about your online activities to provide advertising targeted to suit your interests and preferences. For example, you may see certain ads on other websites for our services because we contract with Google and other similar companies to target our ads based on information we or they have collected, including information that was collected through automated means (such as cookies and web beacons). These companies also use automated technologies to collect information when you click on our ads, which helps track and manage the effectiveness of our marketing efforts.
You may opt out of the automated collection of information by third-party ad networks for the purpose of delivering advertisements tailored to your interests, by visiting the Google Display Network ads’ preferences page at http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/.
Links to other sites:
While we do not intentionally direct our Users to third-party sites outside Hoot Reading , Users may inadvertently link to other sites from within the Hoot Reading a Site. Hoot Reading does not make these sites available, and we cannot be responsible for what they post on their sites. If you or your child provide any information to these other sites, different rules regarding the collection and use of that Personal Information may apply. We are not responsible for the policies or practices of third parties. Contact these entities directly or review their respective privacy policies if you have any questions about their use of the information collected.
We will retain your information for as long as your User Account is active or as needed to provide you services. We will retain and use your information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.
Hoot Reading has implemented commercially reasonable safeguards to protect the Personal Information, including sensitive data such as credit card information, submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it. Although we take certain security measures to protect your privacy, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. Please keep in mind that we cannot and do not guarantee that content you post or create in Hoot Reading will not be viewed by unauthorized persons and that you post content in Hoot Reading at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained in Hoot Reading. Please understand that, even after removal, copies of User content may remain viewable in cached and archived pages, or if other Users have copied or stored your User content.
n the event Hoot Reading Inc. goes through a business transition, such as a merger, acquisition by another company, or sale of all or a portion of its assets, your personally identifiable information will likely be among the assets transferred. You will be notified via email if a change in ownership or control is likely to materially affect the way Personal Information about our Users will be handled.
Hoot Reading may from time to time ask you to provide information on your Hoot Reading experiences, which will be used to measure and improve quality. You are at no time obliged to provide such information. Hoot Reading reserves the right to use anonymized information that does not identify you personally for marketing purposes, for instance by displaying selected comments without a User’s identity on the Hooreading.com website or in communications from the Hoot Reading Team.
We control and operate Hoot Reading from Manitoba, Canada and usage is governed exclusively by the federal and provincial substantive laws applicable in Manitoba, without respect to conflict of laws principles. Please note that we do not represent or warrant that Hoot Reading is appropriate for use in your particular jurisdiction. Those who choose to access Hoot Reading do so at their own initiative and are responsible for complying with all local laws, rules and regulations.
Modifications of the Policy:
Hoot Reading reserves the right to modify this Policy at any time and will notify you by posting any such changes in a revised Policy on the website. Such modifications will become effective on the day they are posted as noted in the policy. Hoot Reading encourages you to frequently review the Policy for any modifications. Unless stated otherwise, our current Policy applies to all information that we have about you and your account. If we make material changes as to how we use Personal Information collected from Users, we will notify Users, where necessary, by email.
