Research-Based and Effective

The Hoot Reading App was incubated on a research project at the Nokia Research Lab with Sesame Workshop (the creators of Sesame Street) and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, and continued to grow alongside research in education.

Studies show that one-on-one, frequent, and consistent reading tutoring is the most effective way for kids to become skillful readers. Our approach to online literacy tutoring is proven to be effective and aligns with a structured literacy approach, informed by a body of research known as the Science of Reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

How young can my child be assessed?

Once your child can stay engaged and show curiosity about letters or books, an assessment can be used to identify where your child is at on their literacy journey. For many families, that is as early as age 4. For others, it makes sense to wait until the child is 5 or 6.

What do I need for an at home assessment?

All Hoot Reading assessments and lessons take place on our web-based app. Your child will need a laptop, computer, or tablet and a stable internet connection. The device must have a camera, microphone, and speaker. We also recommend headphones to help minimize distractions.

I've signed up for an assessment. What happens next?

Once you register for an assessment, one of our enrollment advisors will reach out by email or phone to help you set up your account and schedule your 50 minute assessment lesson. At their scheduled assessment time, your child will log in to the Hoot Reading App to meet their teacher.
