The Hoot Reading App was incubated on a research project at the Nokia Research Lab with Sesame Workshop (the creators of Sesame Street) and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, and continued to grow alongside research in education.

Our programs are designed for children from Kindergarten to Gr. 8. Regardless of age or grade, all lessons start with identifying skill levels so your child gets instruction where they need it.

All lessons take place on our web-based app. Your child will need a laptop, computer, or tablet and a stable internet connection. The device must have a camera, microphone, and speaker. We also recommend headphones to help minimize distractions.

At their first scheduled lesson time, your child will log in to the Hoot Reading App to meet their teacher. The first lesson will focus on the Hoot Reading Assessment to learn more about skill level; this data is then used to design their personalized reading intervention program. Once the assessment is complete, lessons will start with instruction, picking up where the previous lesson left off.

Hoot Reading has a Live Help Desk (with real humans!) available by email, text, or phone from 8 AM to 8:30 PM (CT) on all weekdays, and 8 AM to 2:30 PM (CT) on weekends. Our reading tutors are also trained to help students with basic troubleshooting solutions.
