Giving audio and video permissions
Before joining a lesson, your browser will ask for permission to use the camera and microphone. This usually appears as a small pop-up near the top of the screen.
In Google Chrome, it looks like this:

To continue into the lesson:
-
Click Allow when asked to use the camera and microphone
-
Make sure the correct camera and microphone are selected, especially if your child uses headphones or an external microphone
If permission is granted correctly, your child should be able to see themselves on the screen before joining the lesson.
Checking Permissions Before Your Child's Lesson
When joining a lesson, you can always check your permission settings before joining the lesson to make sure the correct camera and microphone are selected.
How to Troubleshoot
If camera or microphone access was blocked, the lesson may not start correctly. You can fix this by checking your browser settings.
Most browsers show a small camera or lock icon near the website address at the top of the screen. Clicking this icon lets you:
-
Turn camera and microphone access back on
-
Refresh the page after changing the setting
Once permissions are enabled, rejoin the lesson.
If you’re still having trouble
If permissions are enabled but audio or video still isn’t working:
-
Try closing and reopening the browser
-
Make sure no other apps are using the camera or microphone
-
Restart the device if needed
If issues continue, it may be related to the device or internet connection rather than the Hoot Reading app. If more support is required, you can contact support by emailing help@hootreading.com.
