Position Financial Controller
Location:Flexible – Winnipeg, Canada/Remote
Reports to: CFO
Effective date: Immediately


Hoot Reading is a rapidly growing, mission driven EdTech company that aims to help as many kids as possible to become not only proficient, but excellent, readers. Through our online tutoring platform, we provide children with live, 1:1 reading lessons with experienced classroom teachers. 

The company — which is headquartered in Canada and has teachers and students throughout North America —  was incubated on a research project at the Nokia Research Lab in partnership with Sesame Workshop (Sesame Street) and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. We are backed by Spin Master Ventures, the leading global children’s entertainment company behind world-class children’s brands such as Paw Patrol, Etch a Sketch, Toca Boca, and Sago Mini.

We are looking for a finance professional with an entrepreneurial spirit and a proven experience in building scalable processes and managing the overall  financial and accounting operations of an organization . This is an amazing opportunity to make a tangible contribution within a rapidly growing, mission driven company. 


What’s on your plate:

Your role is to establish the Hoot Reading finance and accounting function by:

  • Developing and managing scalable financial processes and controls
  • Liaising with professional services firms to support compliance with tax and assurance requirements
  • Delivering reports and applications for government funding
  • Managing monthly reporting and improving the process of collecting, analyzing and processing financial data
  • Supervising our accounting operations, including general ledger functions, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • Partnering with business functions to provide insights, analysis and to develop process


The Ideal Candidate: 

  • Experience in financial management and process development
  • Proven executor with strong track record of team building
  • CPA or other relevant professional designation
  • Demonstrated passion for process and leveraging technology to scale
  • Proven ability to be adaptable, creative and transparent in an ever changing environment
